On Buddhist Master Hong Yi’s Thought of the Training by Calling the Name of Amidhba in the Perspective of “Zen Calling the Name of Amidhba”
Hong Yi is a famous Buddhist monk in Modern China. He loved both the country and Buddhism. He held that “don’t forget to save the country while calling the name of Amidhba, don’t forget to call the name of Amidhba while saving the country.”This paper is to probe his idea of training in calling the name of Amidhba. First, it deals with Zen, calling the name of Amidhba and the Zen calling the name of Amidhba separately. Second, it describes briefly the evolution of Zen calling the name of Amidhba in China. It also discusses the Master抯 thought about the way of training by calling the name of Amidhba. At last, it analyzes the influence of Hong Yi to the development of the contemporary Buddhism. This paper holds that, calling the name of Amidhba should have been linked closely with Zen. The two have hetu-pratyaya especially in China. Advocating calling the name of Amidhba, Master Hong Yi did not refuse reading the sutra and doing meditation. He advocated to call Buddha’s name mainly for the convenient way such as “In the just moment and condition”and “no one could not learn and nowhere one could not learn”. What he called for has positive significance for purifying human being’s mind.
